I applaud the devs for attemping to keep kids away from bad words and bad people by locking down the chat system, but the Friends system is too cumbersome. My original “review” was written before the game was widely available, a gripe I have now that I’ve played a few games online is the kid protection.
A 10 year old could easily pick up on the game, but if you’re willing to dig a little deeper into the fleet controls, into the crew loadouts, into the weapons selections, into fleet selection, into the advanced weapons (like star mortars, energy webs, gravity bombs etc.) you’ll find a great tactical feast that can’t be beat for the price. To summarize my review, TP is a great game that attempts to bridge the gap between the hardcore game players and their kids/nephews/nieces/immature clones/whatever. It’s the cross between Age of Sail and SFC, with a little Disney thrown in (which is a good thing… trust me). Now I do admit I picked up the mostly because of my respect for Barking Dog / Rockstar Vancouver for their excellent job of extending Homeworld, but this isn’t HW:C redone. The two games are only the same in that they both have space battles as the centerpiece. IMO you can’t really compare Treasure Planet to Homeworld. I know one prominent reviewer who slammed Combat Mission for having “terrible” graphics (which is insane because the only real basis of comparison for Combat Mission is a regular hex based wargame or Close Combat imo). This thread prompted me to look at some screens and I thought “that looks like SFC” and got interested again.Īs to Denny’s point, he’s right. The problem is, I read a bit of the review, saw the HW references and lost interest. Then again, if it does play like SFC it’s NOTHING like Homeworld so, um, ok. It’s hard to make a correct comparison in cases like that and it’s impossible to expect every writer to have played every game. In fairness to Chin, maybe he’s never played an SFC title. On the other hand if you crave the same ol RTS resourcing and throwing thousands of units at someone then TP is NOT the game for you.Ī lighter SFC with wooden sailing ships that ply the spacelanes sounds great to me. Basically if you are looking for tactical ship combat that’s a bit “lighter” than sfc and you “get” sailing ships in space then this is a good purchase.
